Happy National Nutrition Month!

Happy National Nutrition Month! By Amber Odom, RDN, LD

National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

It’s celebrated during the month of March, and focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits. In addition, National Nutrition Month® promotes the Academy and its members to the public and the media as the most valuable and credible source of timely, scientifically-based food and nutrition information.

Every year there is a different theme and key messaging. This year’s theme is “Personalize Your Plate“.  There is no one-size-fits all approach to nutrition and health. We are all unique with different bodies, goals, backgrounds and tastes.

National Nutrition Month Key Messaging this Year:

  1. Eat a variety of nutritious foods everyday
  2. Plan your meals each week
  3. Learn skills to create tasty meals
  4. Consult a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

Who are RDN’s?

RDN’s are food and nutrition experts (that’s me!). An RDN can help you create a personalized eating and activity plan based on your personal needs and preferences to meet your health goals.  We review your medications, lab results, lifestyle and eating habits to assess your specific nutritional needs and create a personalized, flavorful and nutrient-rich eating plan with the right mix of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats, along with recommendations for physical activity that you will enjoy.

And we don’t stop there.  We teach strategies to help overcome mindless eating, whether it be from emotional, stress or just eating out of boredom.

Other Areas RDN’s Can Help with:

  • learning how to recognize hunger and fullness
  • how to make the best choices when eating out
  • how to manage the holidays and still enjoy the food you love
  • strategies and realistic goal setting to reach nutrition goals & improve outcomes

As a RDN, I Specialize in Helping my Patients with:

  • Weight Management (weight loss or weight gain)
  • Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure
  • Bariatric Surgery (Pre-op and Post-op)

In my twenty-plus years practicing as a RDN, I am still amazed at how much my patients are able to treat and improve their health with the right diet and exercise plan.

It’s never too late to make a change!

~Amber
